The national football stadium, which reopened after a complete rebuild with extra event space in 2007, actually made an operating profit of £5m last year. But interest payments and bank fees hindered its financial progress.

The increased operating profit was driven by a rise in revenues of £24.2m, largely from greater Club Wembley seat sales and a decrease in costs of £9.8m through "enhanced operating efficiencies".

"I believe that 2008 will be seen as a watershed year in our history as the stadium reclaimed its place on the world events circuit," said Wembley National Stadium Limited chairman David Bernstein. "I am confident that 2009 will further underline the status of Wembley as one of the world's premier venues, catering to all ages and tastes."
