Compact titles continue gains amid widespread decline

LONDON - Compact newspapers are continuing to win the circulation war in the latest set of ABC figures for June, which sees The Independent and The Times posting increases, while the remaining broadsheets languish.

The Independent, up 15.71% year on year, posted a slight increase of 0.22% up to 261,575, while The Times was up 1.39% this month to 661,330. It is up 1.03% year on year.

The Guardian, which recently admitted it was to join the compact revolution and reduce its size to a "Berliner" format by 2006, was down 0.21% to 388,584 for June, down 5.12% year on year.

Elsewhere, the newly Barclay brothers-owned Telegraph, which also may shrink under new ownership, was also slightly down this month by 0.24% to 906,098, down 1.47% year on year. The Financial Times saw the biggest drop in the qualities this month, down 3.11% to 427,203 and down 5.26% year on year.

In the mid-market, The Express fared well in June. It was up 2.06% to 957,876, while the Daily Mail was slightly down 0.74% to 2,405,499.

Among the tabloids, the Daily Star was the only title to post an increase at a marginal 0.87% to 890,810. It also is the only tabloid to be up year on year at 5.49%. The Daily Mirror, hoping to turn around its fortunes with the appointment of new editor Richard Wallace, was down 0.69% to 1,833,980. Its rival, The Sun, was down 0.37% to 3,348,320 for June.

There was little good news in the Sunday market for the tabloids with the Sunday Express being the only paper to put on sales. It was up 5.24%, putting Richard Desmond's title back over the million mark on 1,002,145. Rival Mail on Sunday was suffering as a result, down 2.48%, but with sales of 2,273,213 it has little to worry about.

Downmarket, the news was not so good for Desmond. The Daily Star Sunday was down 4.05% to 500,461, but is still up 9.1% year on year. The News of the World was down 2.93% to 3,735,839 and the Sunday Mirror was down 2.63% to 1,524,560. Trinity Mirror sister title The People was also down 2.24% to 1,004,480.

In the broadsheet Sunday market, the Independent on Sunday shows none of the success of its daily sister, down 0.31% to 210,015, a fall of 5.33% year on year.

There was better news for The Observer -- it was up 3.21% to 460,239, the Sunday Times was up 1.02% to 1,344,326 and the Sunday Telegraph was down 1.43% to 697,655.

The Barclay brothers' The Business was down 3.24% to 218,126.
