News International chief executive Tom Mockridge today (6 September) updated staff in an email on strategic changes being introduced across the publishing group behind The Times, The Sunday Times and The Sun.
In the message, seen by Media Week, Mockridge described the time period during which the News of the World (NotW) closed as "testing". Efficiencies within the business had alreayd begun, with 100 vacancies not being filled.
He added:"In the period to the end of this financial year, we expect to reduce the News International workforce by 110 staff positions, out of a workforce of approximately 3,000."
No further details of where the 110 jobs cuts would come from was provided, although Media Week understands senior sales and marketing roles are likely to be among those affected.
The chief executive also announced that 89 people working on the now defunct NotW have decided to take redundancy following its closure, while 23 staff have found new positions within the group.
He also unveiled plans of a new digital business at New International which will offer a further 21 jobs.
Mockridge added that: "Despite this tough news, I have great confidence in NI and our future. We are continuing to invest in new products and quality content to protect our future and better equip us for the changing markets."
The new chief executive also said he would be introducing new ways of operating across the business, such as discussions with editors about the use of part-time workers.
Further details of upcoming redundancies are expected to be confirmed after their respective consultation periods.
