Comet chief questions Best Buy fit with UK

US electronics retailer Best Buy's launch of its big-store format in the UK will not succeed, according to Hugh Harvey, managing director of rival electronics retailer Comet.

Speaking at the Marketing Society's Retail Forum last week, Harvey said: 'The UK and US electrical goods markets are fundamentally different.' However, he added that Comet should not underestimate its rivals and it 'will wait to see how (the chain) materialises'.

Best Buy is launching in Europe this year as part of a £1.1bn deal with Carphone Warehouse.

Comet aped its big-format store concept in 2000 at one of its UK stores, but has since ditched the approach.

This year, Comet is repositioning itself as a specialist brand. The firm, which is owned by Kesa Electricals, is rolling out 'living area' showrooms in its stores to promote its home-cinema products.
