COI briefs agencies about security body

LONDON - The Home Office is talking to direct marketing agencies about the launch of the Security Industry Authority, a government body that will license nightclub bouncers and vehicle wheel-clampers.

The SIA, which is being formed under the Private Security Act 2001, is the government's response to growing public and political concerns about the lack of formal regulation of people working in the private security sector. High-profile cases of poor practice and criminality in the industry have also been key factors in the establishment of the SIA.

Four agencies have been invited to pitch next month in a process handled by COI Communications. The COI refused to name the agencies involved, but said it was hunting a shop to produce integrated campaigns targeted at private security workers.

The SIA's remit will include the regulation of employees working in businesses ranging from nightclubs and bars to shopping centres, car parks and museums.

After its launch next year, it will license around 300,000 individuals as well as operate an approved contractors scheme that will aim to ensure that training, recruitment and quality systems are treated as priorities.
