The event, which is due to run from 21 March 2011, has been established to raise awareness of global warming and encourage members of the public to take action to improve the environment.

It has been endorsed by Prime Minster David Cameron and his deputy, Nick Clegg, as well as climate-change campaigner and former US vice-president Al Gore.

In the run-up to Climate Week, the organisers will roll out a national press campaign featuring sponsors and partners, which will also be able to use the Climate Week logo in their own marketing.

During the week itself, an online environmental 'challenge' will be set each day to which school and university teams will be encouraged to find a solution. Regional winners will be selected from each type of educational institution taking part.

In addition, organisations across the UK will be invited to promote and showcase ways of tackling climate change.

Climate Week is the creation of Kevin Steele, also the founder of Global Entrepreneur Week and National Family Week. The inaugural event had been due to take place this year, but was postponed.

Sponsorship agency, Generate, brokered the deals between the event and the four partners. According to the agency, Climate Week offers brands a good opportunity to display their green credentials.

However, EDF Energy's involvement is likely to draw criticism from some quarters. The French energy company held its second 'Green Britain Day' last week.

This event encourages the public to 'do something green for the team'. Last year, the Advertising Standards Authority dismissed complaints that took issue with EDF's claims to be eco-friendly and British.

Both Green Britain Day and the sponsorship of Climate Week are part of EDF's wider sustainability commitments, which also include an undertaking to reduce its CO2 emissions by 60% by 2020.

Climate Week is seeking a head of marketing and a full-time campaign team to drive public awareness of the event.
