Classical music festival on the 'Brink'

Organisers of classical festival Brinkburn, which takes place over two weekends in July, have been hit by Northern Rock Foundation's decision to cut its cultural funding.

The Northumberland event, which features classical and choral music, is now in it's 17th year. A consultation period with supporters and partners is currently underway to explore possibilities for its future.

"We have been very appreciative of the huge support received over the past ten years from Northern Rock Foundation but realise that these things don't go on for ever," said Richard Maudslay, festival chairman.

"We accept that things will need to change in the future and are actively discussing with our supporters and others how we might bridge our funding gap."

This year, Brinkburn features British tenor Mark Padmore accompanied by pianist Roger Vignoles, young string quartets and oboist Nicholas Daniel. It will include music by Mendelssohn, Bliss and Schubert.

Maudslay added: "Our strengths are excellent music, especially choral, by world class musicians in a truly remarkable environment.  It would be wonderful to find a way of continuing with this combination but we would rather go out with a memorable bang than settle for something which compromised these aims."
