Chrysalis taps in to growing download market with Motorola deal

LONDON - Chrysalis Radio has launched a song-download promotion backed by Motorola.

The promotion is running across the Galaxy Network and offers listeners the chance to download up to five tracks after listeners had voted for their "Top Galaxy Anthems".

Listeners text a keyword and in response receive a message that allows them to download a song directly to their phone or PC.

Chrysalis claims that the promotion marks the first time a UK radio station has run a full-song download service via mobile. It said that it will be rolling out a range of mobile services in future.

Ian James, managing director of Chrysalis Mobile, said: "We are innovative in the ways we interact with our listeners and for them to feel a part of the station they listen to on a daily basis.

"In conjunction with our listener vote, we are able to further interact with the listener by having relevant content available which listeners can purchase using a simple call to action."

Separately, a new report claims that illegal downloading of music is on the wane, with two thirds of people who have downloaded from unauthorised sites claiming they will download less in the future. This is due to fears about prosecution, viruses and inferior quality.

The 2005 Digital Music Survey, released by online music research specialist Entertainment Media Research, says that the number of consumers downloading digital music has grown by 75% in the space of a year, and that the amount spent on buying music downloads will rise by 60% in the next six months.
