Cheryl Cole's record label orchestrates grass-roots marketing campaign

LONDON - Music labels are being more creative with their marketing campaigns and budgets as they aim to sell more albums in the run up to Christmas.

Cheryl Cole's record label orchestrates grass-roots marketing campaign

Cheryl Cole's debut album goes on sale tomorrow. In a bid to get fans to splash out on the CD or download, Fascination Records which is part of Universal, has launched a marketing campaign featuring signed copies and personalised calendar give-aways.

Fascination Records has sent 200 signed albums to Amazon, while Play.com is offering fans a shopping trip offer. HMV.com is giving away personalised calenders with albums and even Orange is offering signed lyrics.

Record labels have seen music sales plummet as it becomes easier to download music illegally for free. Last year record sales were down 6%.

Cole's album, 3 Words, was also promoted through a choreographed social networking campaign.  MySpace hosted a live webchat with the singer and Bebo ran a competition where users could make a video for the chance to interview the star. On Twitter fans were able to ask questions and then see Cole answer them in a video on her website. MSN Messenger was also given an exclusive video which quickly became the site's most watched and commented on.

Cole's debut solo single, Fight for This Love, went to number 1 last week in the singles chart.
