According to unofficial TV ratings, after 9.3m tuned into 'Coronation Street' at 7.30pm, the cup tie against Portuguese team FC Braga ran from 8pm to 10.30pm and attracted an average of 3.6m viewers, peaking at 4.2m.
The match was outdone in the first half by both public service channels, with BBC One's 'Watchdog' scoring 4.9m and 21.9% and BBC Two's double helping of 'Masterchef Goes Large' pulling in just over 4m and 18%.
Five's children's hospital documentary 'Child in a Million' attracted 1.2m viewers and earned a 5.2% share.
Channel 4's offering in the 8pm to 9pm slot, 'Relocation Relocation', got 3.1m viewers and a 13.4% share, making way for 'Grand Designs' to take the field.
The third episode in the new series, which followed a couple aiming to make a houseboat out of a steel barge for £50,000, had an audience of 5.2m and a share of 22.7%.
The next most watched programme was the second half of the football, in which Spurs went through to the quarter finals after a 3-2 victory, followed by BBC One's 'New Street Law' with 3.1m and 13.6%.
Five's 9pm film 'Before You Go' pulled in 1.6m and earned a 7.8% share, beating BBC Two's 'Party Animals', which got 1.4m and a 6.3% share.
