Centrica buys stake in nuclear power

LONDON - Centrica, owner of British Gas, has bought a 20% stake in nuclear company British Energy from French energy supplier EDF.

The deal is thought to be worth £2.25bn. The move signals a shift toward nuclear power, which is carbon-free.

Centrica has been under pressure from shareholders to invest in alternative supplies as it can only meet a third of its demand from its own sources.

EDF bought British Energy last year for an estimated £12bn.
