Celebrity Love Island haemorrhages viewers as another half-million abandon show

LONDON - 'Celebrity Love Island' took another ratings dive last night as 600,000 viewers deserted the ITV1 show, which is being called one of the worst reality television shows yet devised by TV critics.

The series, which sees 12 single Z-list celebrities holed up together on a Fijian island for five weeks, averaged just 3.4m viewers last night, down from 4m Tuesday night's outing.

The show has steadily been losing viewers since it debuted on Monday night with 5.3m viewers.

The good news for ITV is that 'Celebrity Love Island' has been successful in the much sought-after 16- to 35-year age group, pulling an impressive 28%, 12 share points above the slot average.

An ITV spokesman said: "We are pleased with its performance. People have to realise that it is going out in a 10pm as opposed to a 9pm slot and there's a significant difference in the ratings. Besides, everyone is talking about it."

Last night's show did have its moments as Abi Titmuss, best known for being the former girlfriend of disgraced TV presenter John Leslie, asked Rebecca Loos why she had sold her story about David Beckham to the newspapers.

Loos told ex-nurse Titmuss that she did it because of the "misinformation being printed about her", and defended the move by saying she could have made more money if she had given more intimate details.

The moment was, however, one of few "highlights" as critics laid into the show, which has been attacked for being boring and under-produced.

Daily Mirror TV critic Jim Shelley describes the show as "so bad, you can actually feel your brain cells eroding while you glare at it" in his two-page spread "12 reasons why Celebrity Love Island is the worst TV show ever".

The Independent TV critic Thomas Sutcliffe wrote that after watching 'Celebrity Love Island', "fresh from Sodom and Gomorrah Productions", he was considering going on a retreat.

"I don't really fancy rising at 6am to contemplate the wounds of Christ, but even that has to be better than watching Abi Titmuss squeeze the last ounce of profit out of her Cheerful Slapper franchise."

While frolicking in the sun, Titmuss has received bad news from home. As Channel 4 is to air clips of her infamous sex tapes tonight, after the former nurse failed to have films banned last year.

The documentary 'Abi Titmuss: Modern Day Morality Tale' shows Titmuss performing sex acts with a mystery girl while shamed TV presenter Leslie videotapes.
