Carphone Warehouse signs up as first Radio Aid sponsor

LONDON – Carphone Warehouse has signed up as the first official sponsor of the UK Radio Aid tsunami appeal and has pledged £170,000 for the privilege.

UK Radio Aid is still seeking sponsors for each hour of the 12-hour broadcast, which will take over the commercial airwaves from 6am to 6pm on Monday January 17.

The UK commercial radio industry is to raise money for children affected by the Asian tsunami disaster.

All commercial stations will unite to broadcast a special programme featuring a range of DJs, celebrities and musicians, attracting an estimated audience of more than 20m listeners from stations owned by Emap, Capital Radio, Chrysalis, GMG Radio, GWR, SRH, Classic Gold and Virgin.

The day will be produced live from Capital Radio's headquarters in Leicester Square with ITV2 producing a behind-the-scenes documentary on the event to broadcast on Monday at 8pm, shortly after it finishes.

Each hour of programming will be hosted by two guest DJs who will introduce live acoustic sets, guest interviews, competitions, auctions, pledges, messages and news breaks.

Former media mogul and DJ Chris Evans has announced that he is making a return to the airwaves after four years to take part in the appeal.

The effort already has the support from a range of politicians and celebrities including Prime Minister Tony Blair, Real Madrid and England footballer Michael Owen, Jamelia and Mick Jagger.

Mark Story, chairman of UK Radio Aid, said: "I am immensely proud of and grateful to our colleagues across commercial radio who, when asked for an extraordinary response to this disaster, were all in immediate agreement to unite for this very special day."
