Carlton and Granada to pool internet operations

UK media groups Granada Media and Carlton Communications, which together dominate ITV, are planning to pool their internet activities as a joint venture under the ITV brand.

LONDON (Brand Republic) - UK media groups Granada Media and Carlton Communications, which together dominate ITV, are planning to pool their internet activities as a joint venture under the ITV brand.

The two companies are said to be in early talks over the proposals which would involve heavily promoting their internet interests on ITV and contributing content to the ITV.co.uk website.

It is understood that Granada is planning to abandon its G-Wizz entertainment website in favour of ITV.co.uk, while Carlton would prefer to hold on to its film site popcorn.co.uk and its game site jamba.co.uk.

The proposals aim to significantly enhance the relatively basic ITV website and increase advertising and e-commerce activity.

Granada and Carlton own 90% of the ITV network and the two companies have already expressed a desire to turn ITV into a single company if the government goes ahead with plans to relax TV ownership regulations.
