Careers: What's it really like inside - Waitrose

- Do you fight the perception that Waitrose is costlier than its rivals?

Our customers understand that true value is a balance between quality, price and responsible sourcing. We have recently run 'meet the farmer' sessions, and when customers hear about the care that goes into producing our food, they understand that it costs what it does for a reason.

- How do you come up with ideas?

We work closely with our buyers and customer-insight team, who follow food trends and retail ideas, so if we see something that captures our imagination, we will do it.

- What is your main challenge?

We recently relaunched our website, Waitrose.com, and it is a constant challenge to ensure it mirrors the experience of customers in terms of expert food advice and service.

- Describe the team in three words.

Passionate, principled and partners.

- A lot of Waitrose's promotional activity recently has focused on picnics. Has the marketing team had the chance to go on any?

The team is encouraged to take part in events. Recently this has involved a trip to a farm to pick asparagus and workshops in bread-making.

- Is there lots to eat in the office?

Yes, from recipes being tested to new product ranges being considered. We are all perfectionists and foodies, so if we don't like something, it won't get anywhere near our customers.

- What are the other perks of the job?

A final-salary pension, a percentage of profit paid as an annual bonus, a discount at Waitrose and John Lewis stores, subsidised theatre and concert tickets, as well as access to several country clubs, a castle, a golf course and yachts.

- Is there a dress code?

Yes. Shirt and tie for men and skirt or tailored trousers for the ladies.

- Does the marketing team socialise outside of office hours?

We have regular planned social events, subsidised by the company, so when we get together it is a good night out. There are also sports and social clubs, from horse-riding to wine-tasting.

- What are the hours like?

Normal office hours, although we are committed to delivering projects, so when things are busy, we will pull out all the stops to deliver.

- Are there any downsides?

With such great food around, it is a struggle not to overindulge.
