Capital Radio to bid for Glasgow FM licence with Gold

LONDON - Capital Radio is to bid for a new FM licence in Glasgow using its classic hits Capital Gold brand.

The service, which will be named Glasgow Gold, will play hits from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. As well as music, which Capital says will be presented by "big name DJs", the station will offer local news and interviews with a strong grounding in local roots.

The Gold format has proved extremely popular for Capital and can be found on seven Capital regional licences in England and Wales. Capital already owns Beat 106 in Scotland and is looking to add to the success it has seen in Glasgow and central Scotland.

In London, more listeners tune in to Gold on AM than to Virgin 105.8 FM. Earlier this month, Capital Gold announced it was investing a six-figure sum in a six-month London taxi promotion, the radio station's first branding campaign for two years.

Created in-house, the campaign uses the strapline "One track and you're back". The aim is to reposition the brand to appeal to a younger audience.

Lyn Long, brand managing director of Capital Gold, said: "We believe there is a substantial unserved audience in Glasgow -- "the gold generation" -- that would tune into Gold if offered an FM service. We are looking forward to broadcasting our unique music offering to the people of Glasgow and west Scotland."

Last week, the Guardian Media Group confirmed it was considering expanding its radio business with a bid for Capital Radio.
