The decision by Channel 4 to allow an evicted contestant, who will be eligible for the show's £100,000 cash prize, back into the house sparked a flood of calls and emails to Ofcom at the weekend from viewers who have spent money on premium rate calls to boot out unpopular housemates.
Channel 4 confirmed on Friday night's live vote that viewers would be able to pick four out of 10 evicted contestants to return to a secret area next to the main 'Big Brother' house, with one of the four being invited back in by the remaining contestants.
The favourites to go back into the 'Big Brother' house are understood to be Mikey, Nikki and Grace, who attracted 88% of the public vote when she was voted off.
It is understood that the vote to bring back an evicted contestant has already raised £150,000, which Channel 4 said it would donate to homeless charity Shelter, Teenage Cancer Trust and the winner's chosen organisation.
However, the charity donation has not quelled anger from regular viewers who have spent money voting off a contestant who could now be given a second chance.
'Big Brother' makers Endemol defended the move, stating that the public vote to bring back a former contestant has pulled in a record number of votes from the public.
Channel 4 described its decision to bring back a former contestant as a "big finale surprise" for the series.
The 12-week series finishes on August 18.
