3G Capital, which acquired Burger King in September for $3.26bn, has cut 40 UK staff. Most are believed to be at its Slough headquarters.

The marketing division has been reduced from 10 employees to four. It will be led by interim marketing director Duncan Osborne, who stepped in when Sarah Power departed last month. By comparison, rival McDonald's UK marketing department has between 20 and 30 staff.

A Burger King spokesman said several UK marketing roles have been centralised into a broader EMEA marketing team, and redundancies amounted to about 2% of the company's total UK workforce.

He claimed the new UK structure allowed Burger King to "better align with its business goals and position the company for long-term success".
