The guide is written by data specialists Nicola McKilligan and Naomi Powell and offers the guidance needed to understand and comply with the Data Protection Act 1998 and other privacy legislation.
The book aims to provide practical compliance advice and clarify requirements of law to ensure smaller companies do not suffer from data scams, which can cost businesses up to 拢100 a time.
The guide also provides examples and reveals the way organisations process client and customer information and gives specific advice for accountants, solicitors or any other professionals in high-risk areas.
The book is published by BSI and costs 拢30.
Co-author McKilligan is a privacy and information law consultant with more than 10 years' experience of advising businesses. She previously worked for the Information Commissioner where she helped develop policy and strategy advice for the regulator and advised financial services organisations on compliance.
Powell is the author of several BSI guides on data protection and writes regularly on data protection issues for trade and national press.
Powell also worked at the Information Commissioner's office working in the Registration, Policy and Compliance teams. Her approach to compliance was developed as a data protection officer for HFC Bank, Barclaycard and Halifax General Insurance.
