British TV sweeps the board at the US Emmy awards

LONDON - British TV gained international recognition at last night's prestigious Emmy Awards after scooping six of the seven awards, with Channel 4 being the resounding winner and taking home three awards.

Channel 4's hat-trick of awards came from: the controversial documentary 'The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off'; factual series 'Brat Camp', which followed the adventures of six disruptive teenagers sent away from home to mend their ways in a harsh US behaviour camp; and the Granada Kids' drama 'The Illustrated Mum'.

The BBC also had a good night. BBC One took the prize for best drama for its crime series 'Waking the Dead' and BBC Two won in the arts category for 'George Orwell: A Life in Pictures'.

Not to be left out, ITV picked up one award for Granada's 'Henry VIII', which won in the TV movie/mini series category and starred 'Sexy Beast' actor Ray Winstone.

The only non-British winner was Germany, which picked up an award for best comedy with 'Berlin'. Interestingly, no British programme was entered in this category.

The 32nd International Emmy's was hosted by camp comedian Graham Norton and was held in New York last night.
