British TV producers reap 25% increase in export sales

LONDON - British TV producers earned £980m from export sales in 2008, up 25% on 2007, according to new research.

The study was conducted by TRP for Pact, the trade body for the independent television, film, animation and interactive industries.

The figures take into account only the revenues of the companies who responded in both 2007 and 2008, including BBC Worldwide and ITV Global Entertainment, so count just 13 companies' revenues.

The 22 companies who responded in 2008 made total revenues of £1.2bn.

The biggest revenue streams were, in order: TV, brand licensing, video and DVD, and format sales.

Licensing revenues experience the greatest growth, rising 66% from 2007 to £215m.

Chris Bonney, managing director of Outright Distribution and Pact council member, said: "This survey shows that the UK continues to produce innovative and entertaining shows that are loved across the world, and international revenues play an important part in that.

"For independents, these export revenues are a crucial part of their ability to invest up to £190m per year into new programmes, despite reduced margins and the particularly challenging economic environment we currently find ourselves in."
