The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said that after a review process, and considering the economic climate "it was difficult for manufacturers to justify the cost when there is no indication of when the [economic] recovery will be".

The SMMT said that it would consider a show in the future and that manufacturers were committed to the event, but if it does return in 2011 and beyond it "could take a new format and may not be a show in the traditional form".

At last year's event an estimated 23,500 exhibitor personnel, contractors, security, catering staff and stand staff attended.

In 2006 the to a London-based consortium comprising Single Market Events, London EventCo and Excel. 2008's show was largely seen as a success for the British motor industry and the event's organisers.
