British Airways is believed to be about to revamp its online presence
with a business-to-consumer portal, which it is gearing up to launch next
month.
The airline is set to announce its online intentions today
(Wednesday).
It is thought that the company will also announce a replacement for Julia
Groves, its former head of new media, who left after Christmas to join
eVentures (see Revolution, 15 December 1999, p 3) as business-to-consumer
launch director.
News of the proposed portal adds momentum to recent reports of BA’s
efforts to boost its presence in the online travel market with a site
which will help it rival travel operators such as lastminute.com. It has
been tipped to join some of its competitors in the launch of an online
travel store which would aim to combat competition from online travel
agents, as well as reducing operational running costs.
Other airlines reported to be involved in the proposal include Air France,
Lufthansa, KLM and Swissair.
