Britannia paves the way for transactional elements online

Britannia Building Society has relaunched its web site (www. britannia.co.uk) in preparation for the addition of transactional services later in the year.

The site, designed by interactive consultancy Oyster Partners and built by Britannia's in-house team, is to go live on April 30.

Andy Woodcock, project manager at Britannia, said: "We have started from scratch, re-writing the content of the site, and changing the look and feel, to bring our strong offline brand to life online. The design is more flexible, so we can add transactional capabilities in future."

The redesign follows Britannia's appointment of technology analyst Forrester to carry out customer research online.

"We asked customers what a modern mutual should look like online. They asked for a crisper, cleaner look, and a less formal manner," Woodcock said.

Britannia has also launched an online mortgage application product that credit checks applicants. Mike Mulligan, senior product manager at Oyster Partners, said: "The application guarantees successful users a mortgage if they tell the truth in the online form. Britannia will look to bring more of their services online this year, including loans and savings products."

Britannia is the UK's second-largest building society, with 188 branches and 3,300 staff.
