Brian Ferry wins Nazi apology from Daily Mirror

LONDON - The Daily Mirror has printed an apology to Roxy Music singer Bryan Ferry over its reporting of an interview he gave to a German newspaper that resulted in him being dropped as a spokesman for Marks & Spencer.

Ferry had told the German newspaper Welt Am Sonntag that he admired the work of Leni Riefenstahl, whose films were used as Nazi propaganda tools, and the architect Albert Speer.

The Daily Mirror reported on the interview under the headline "The Nazis were so amazing" and claimed that Ferry had been "singing their praises".

Today it has published an apology tucked away on page 22, in which the newspaper accepts that he had "spoken only of his admiration from an artistic point of view for some aspects of German art architecture and presentation, which were associated with the Nazi regime".

It apologises to the singer for its report.

Nonetheless, the damage has been done for Ferry, who apologised for his remarks and said he found the Nazi regime "abhorrent", with Marks & Spencer dropping him from its menswear campaign shortly after the story broke.
