Thirty-four of the best BMX riders in the world will descend on Alexandra Palace and Park to take part. More than 10,000 people are expected at the event, which will see riders Corey Bohan, Gary Young and Kriss Kyle taking on huge jumps overlooking the London skyline.

Duncan Wilson, chief executive of Alexandra Palace and Park, said: "We are thrilled to announce the Red Bull BMX cycling event this May in Alexandra Park. It is going to be an action-packed family event, making great use of the fantastic setting and views of the London skyline that the park offers."

The event is the brain child of BMX legend Kye Forte, who said: "We plan to make the 2012 Red Bull Empire of Dirt course the most challenging ever seen with oversized features, motocross style jumps and snowboard type hits. What better location to take BMX riding to the next level than at Alexandra Palace with incredible views out over London"

Red Bull Empire of Dirt was first held in 2008 in Newton Abbot, Devon.
