Mint Royale's Neil Claxton and Chris Baker have gone back into the studio to record a full version of the track, which was remixed to accompany the sequence from the classic film 'Singin' in the Rain', performed in the ad by a digitally enhanced, breakdancing Gene Kelly.
The group's record label Faith & Hope said on its website: "We were discussing the the possibilities of a full-length version of the track that is currently being used as the soundtrack for the new VW Golf ad. We've had so many enquiries from all over the world that Neil said he'd give it a go and see what happens."
A spokeswoman for the record label said it was still in negotiations, with confirmation of the release expected next week. "It looks like it might be going ahead, we should know for sure by next week," she said.
If the track is released, it is likely to hit the charts by May or June, after the 10-week ad campaign has finished broadcasting.
The news comes as Les Rhythmes Digital track 'Jacques Your Body', used in the Citroen C4 ad by Euro RSCG, is being re-released as a summer dance anthem by independent record labels Wall of Sound and Ministry of Sound.
In addition, Honda and creative agency Wieden & Kennedy were planning to release 'Hate' song by US writer and radio legend Garrison Keillor, which is the soundtrack to the car manufacturer's latest animated diesel engine spot "grrr".
Another song currently appearing in an ad, the Caesars' 'Jerk it Out', is being tipped as a chart topper when it is released next month. It appears on ads for Apple's iPod Shuffle.
