VW delays MediaCom and MPG $500m media decision

LONDON – MediaCom and the Media Planning Group will have to wait a week for the result of Volkswagen's global $500m (£267m) media review after the car-maker revealed it was delaying its decision.

VW had scheduled the announcement to coincide with the North American International Auto Show, which began on January 15, but according to sources it will be put back at least a week while executives in Europe and the US come to a final decision.

Havas-owned MPG runs the North American task and WPP/Grey Global Group's MediaCom handles the Europe media account.

It is understood that VW management in Germany want to consolidate with MediaCom, while US executives favour MPG. As it stands, the decision could go either way.

For Havas, winning VW is crucial after Euro RSCG Worldwide and MPG pulled out of the $300m Intel account last week, leaving three other agencies in the running.

The news comes as VW announced last week it was entering into a wide-ranging deal with NBC Universal, the company behind hits such as 'ER', 'Friends' and 'The Mummy', to feature its products in its movies and TV shows.
