Brand in the news - Little Chef

I am a proud consumer of Little Chef ('gasp', I hear you cry). Although I remain unabashed by my confession, Heston Blumenthal has made Little Chef's breakfasts acceptable - even to my health-conscious wife.

The thought of Little Chef without its sub-brand of Olympic breakfasts filled my oh-so-healthy heart with dread. There is no doubt that Olympic breakfast and Little Chef go together like bread and butter.

There is a broader issue highlighted by the 'Olympic breakfast', however, which is the use of adjectives in brand names.

The English language has been forced to offer up too many parts to become proper nouns.

LOCOG's graceful decision to permit the Olympic breakfast to continue is, of course, right. The question is whether the sub-brand should stay because it is a national institution, or because it reverts the big 'O' to a lowly adjective.

As a fan, I think Little Chef should offer not only an Olympic breakfast, but also a 'More than' breakfast, an 'Easy' breakfast, and perhaps, with Heston's help, consider the 'Pedigree' breakfast.
