The British Phonographic Industry has delayed the latest development in the music industry following fears that independent repertoire is not adequately represented online and would not have been ready by March 20, the original date for inclusion.
The decision came after a meeting of the Official UK Charts Company, where BPI members urged that the plan be delayed to April 17, to which the OCC board agreed.
Peter Jamieson, BPI chairman, said: "We have to try and establish a realistic level playing field of opportunity. It's all about market access."
The group says it is working with everyone involved to try to prioritise potential hit singles and ensure they are available for download.
The inclusion of download formats has been described by the BPI as "the most significant development in the charts for 20 years".
Jamieson added: "For a multitude of reasons, the current chart representation of independent repertoire at the major download outlets is poor."
Jamieson has asked OCC charts director Omar Maskatiya to present plans for the new combined chart to representatives of specialist independent trade association Aim next week.
