Billionaire Trump 'amazed' by McDonald's $1 menu in new advertising campaign

NEW YORK - Donald Trump, billionaire property tycoon and celebrity divorce, has added another line to his CV -- star of a television commercial for McDonald's.

The ad, created by DDB Chicago, is to promote McDonald's new $1 menu, and will be part of a larger campaign featuring celebrities known for their ability to spot a good deal.

In the Trump spot, he tries to get long-time McDonald's character Grimace, who makes a return to McDonald's advertising, to let him in on the secret of how the burger chain is able to offer such a deal. It finishes with the strapline: "Got a buck? You're in luck".

Details of the payment given to Trump were not made public, although it is likely that the billionaire received considerably more than a year's supply of Happy Meals for his work.

Marlena Peleo-Lazar, vice-president and chief creative officer at McDonald's, said: "Combining our beloved characters with a high-powered celebrity like Donald Trump and adding a little humour really resonated with consumers as a way to bring our value offer to life.

"Casting our own famous characters in these ads will bring back fond memories of classic McDonald's advertising that our customers have always enjoyed."

McDonald's has promised more high-profile celebrities to promote the $1 menu later in the year.
