McDonald's aims at students with Virgin card tie-up

McDonald's has linked with Virgin Student, the loyalty card scheme operated by Virgin, in an attempt to target the lucrative student market.

The fast food giant is the first major non-Virgin consumer brand to sign up as a full-time partner to the Vcard scheme, which gives students discounts and promotions.

The Odeon cinema chain has also signed up for the coming academic year. Virgin brands supporting the scheme are Virgin Mobile and Virgin Megastores.

Now in its third year of operation, the card is distributed via the scheme's partners and online at Virginstudent.com.

Users present the card each time they make an online or in-store purchase to receive a discount.

Offers are flagged up on the web site and a number of e-mails and SMS text messages are allocated to each partner to use during the year, to alert cardholders to their promotions.

Half a million VCards are expected to be in circulation by Christmas, and Virgin Student expects demand to be so high this year that it is printing 75% more cards than it did for 2001.
