Beyonce and Britney in clash of music titans for Pepsi

LONDON - Britney, Beyonce, Pink and Enrique Iglesias are set to battle it out gladiator-style armed with shields, swords and maces in the latest big-budget commercial for Pepsi Cola.

In what is set to be one of the most talked about ads of the year, Pepsi is billing the ad called "gladiators" as "a Roman clash of the music titans".

The new spot is due to hit television screens on February 1. Beyonce, Pink and Britney all appear in skimpy armour, which includes Pink in a chainmail bikini. Enrique plays an evil Roman emperor reminiscent of Joaquin Phoenix in 'Gladiator'.

The ad has been directed by Tarsem Singh, who was behind Pepsi's spaghetti western take-off last year with David Beckham. Singh has also directed the feature film 'The Cell', starring Jennifer Lopez, and music videos for REM.

The gladiator spot is Pink's first appearance in a television commercial, while Britney and Beyonce are both old hands, having appeared in Pepsi ads before.

According to Pink: "I've never been in a commercial before so just that in itself was pretty exciting to me. I always thought I would never take a can and sip it and go 'aaah' but I'm doing it now so it's pretty funny."

Pepsi and Coca-Cola have both responded to sinking sales of cola by injecting ever more celebrity in their ads, with Penelope Cruz and Courtney Cox Arquette appearing in ads for Coke. However, Pepsi tried a different tack late last year, which encouraged people to drink the cola because it goes well with food.

Pepsi retains BBDO Worldwide for its US advertising.
