Betfair is first C4 betting advertiser

LONDON - Channel 4 has signed up Betfair as the first betting company to advertise during the commercial breaks around its horse-racing coverage.

It is the first bookmaker to run spot ads around Channel 4 Racing. It follows last year’s passage of legislation allowing spot ads by gambling companies on TV for the first time.

Betfair has signed up for a spot ad package in Channel 4 Racing and the Cheltenham Festival, with ads in C4’s afternoon racing coverage, plus two 30-second spots per day during this week’s festival.

Channel 4 is also looking to find a bookmaker to work on a long-term exclusive spot ad partnership.

Strategic sales manager Monica Manoras said: “We are looking at a number of options. We are speaking to a number of the bookmakers and could work with one or two on an exclusive basis for the whole inventory, or we could create a ‘golden spot’ package. We are also looking at exclusivity for advertisers for festivals such as Glorious Goodwood.”

Dubai Holdings, owner of the Travelodge hotel chain, remains the sponsor of Channel 4 Racing. It was signed up after Tote pulled out following changes to the Gambling Act that enabled bookmakers to advertise during sports broadcasts.
