Beckhams to go head-to-head in snacks ad drive

David and Victoria Beckham are primed to battle it out in a UK 'snack war' ahead of the 2002 World Cup as the England captain prepares to sign a deal promoting Golden Wonder's range of snack products.

Golden Wonder has approached the footballer to lead a push for brands including Wotsits Goalden Balls, the name of which is similar to Beckham's nickname.

Beckham and Golden Wonder have yet to sign contracts, but the deal is understood to be close to completion.

Victoria Beckham is shortly to appear in ads for rival Walkers' upmarket crisps, Sensations.

If the deal goes ahead, David Beckham will be able to add Golden Wonder to a list of promotional contracts that includes Marks & Spencer. He recently agreed to design a childrenswear range and feature in ad campaigns for the retail brand.

Golden Wonder has also secured TV presenter duo Ant and Dec to spearhead an interactive phone-in promotion for Wotsits and Nik Naks.

The World Cup game, called Goalden Shoot Out, will see consumers participate in a telephone-based penalty shoot-out in which Dec is the referee and Ant is in goal.

Triangle Communications created the promotion.
