BBC Worldwide nets £5m in Cannes programme deals

LONDON - BBC Worldwide, the BBC's commercial arm, signed programme licensing and co-production deals worth £5m at this year's Mipcom TV festival in Cannes.

The broadcaster licensed more than 1,000 hours of programming to TV channels around the world.

These include the natural history series 'Wild New World', sold to WDR Germany, SVT Poland, VRT Catalunya, TeleMadrid, TV Valencia and Euskal Teelebista in Spain, and YLE in Finland; and 'The Life of Mammals', David Attenborough's new 10-part series, to YLE Finland, SVT Sweden, VRT Belgium, ORT Russia, M-Net South Africa and ABC Australia.

The BBC forecasts that the deals struck at Mipcom will generate £40m in revenues.

VRT Belgium licenced a number of other programmes including 'Crime and Punishment', starring John Simms; 'Spooks'; 'Merseybeat'; 'Tweenies' and teen action hero 'Ace Lightning'.

'Tipping the Velvet', the new period drama, is going to CBC Canada, while hit comedy 'The Office', currently in its second series in the UK, has been licensed to France's TPS Cinema.

BBC Worldwide CEO Rupert Gavin said: "It's clear from our early success that overseas broadcasters are eager to acquire rights to our plentiful supply of prestigious, high-end programming. With early hits across all genres and all markets, we expect great things for our new line-up of programming."

BBC Worldwide was created in 1994 to maximise revenues from TV shows funded by the licence fee. Last year, BBC Worldwide ploughed £106m back into the publicly funded BBC channels.
