BBC World to go digital in Germany doubling viewers

LONDON – News and information channel, BBC World, is set to double its reach across Germany as the nation's digital TV network is launched.

BBC World to go digital in Germany doubling viewers

The 24-hour news channel will be available as part of the national Kabel Deutchland package from September. It is expected to boost the channel's availability from 11m to 23m German homes.

Gerry Ritchie, head of network development at BBC World, said: "This is an incredibly exciting development, potentially giving all television viewers in Germany access to BBC's highly regarded programmes for the first time.

"The channel is fast becoming a digital must-have across Europe – we have a digital frequency in Berlin, Brandenburg, Italy, Sweden and The Netherlands with more to come."

Manuel Cubero, director of Cable TV at KDG added: "With BBC World, we have the international channel with the highest increase in daily viewing in our free digital package."

KDG is offering free digital TV upon purchase of a digital decoder, similar to the UK BSkyB and BBC-owned Freeview package -- which recently hit the 4m homes mark.
