The BBC’s flagship news site BBC News Online has been nominated in the news category alongside CNN, Salon, Inside and CNET News, while the BBC''s World Service will compete against COMFM, Fresh Air, StormLive and Youth Radio for the title of best radio site.
In all, 135 websites have won nominations for the fifth annual Webby Awards, which take place in San Francisco at the War Memorial Opera House on July 18.
In the humour category, Fucked Company, the site that has become infamous for its coverage of the dotcom crash, is up against sites such as The Onion, Modern Humorist and National Lampoon.I
n the finance category, CBS Marketwatch and Motley Fool fight it out against Yahoo! Finance among others. In the TV category, the History Channel’s site fights it out against ESPN.com, NBC Olympics, nickjr.com and PBS Online.Other Webby categories include broadband, games, government and law, kids and living.
The Webby academy has some 350 members whose members include such names as Francis Ford Coppola, Bjork and The Simpsons creator Matt Groening.Webby director Maya Draisin said, “With the internet undergoing major change, the Webby Awards are needed now more than ever to help people avoid the hype and to enjoy the websites that are the most outstanding, entertaining and useful.”
