
In an interview with the Financial Times, Lyons said that he opposes David Cameron's proposal to freeze the fee at its current level of £139.50, and is also against the notion that the money should be used to help prop up other broadcasters, such as Channel 4.
He also reminded the Government and opposition parties that he and the other trustees were appointed by the Queen, "rather than just at the dictate of ministers", so it was vital that the Trust ensures that it fights robustly to protect the independence of the BBC.
