BBC threatens EastEnders star with £20,000 fine for plugging brands

LONDON - The BBC is threatening to fine 'EastEnders' star Jack Ryder £20,000 for promoting a number of brands in an interview with OK! magazine following his wedding to former Hear'say singer Kym Marsh.

The BBC has said that Ryder, who plays Jamie Mitchell in the soap opera, breached the terms of his contract, which has strict rules regarding commercial endorsements. BBC stars are banned from promoting or endorsing products or companies without permission.

In an interview with OK! magazine, Ryder and Marsh plugged a menswear shop and a hotel that helped with their wedding. The pair are reported to have received £300,000 for rights to cover their wedding and honeymoon.

BBC bosses are reported to be furious about the deal and could fine Ryder one fifth of his £100,000-a-year salary.

Ryder is due to leave 'EastEnders' in November and The Sun reports that the BBC may even axe a dramatic storyline that was to facilitate his departure and force him to leave the soap early.

It also says that other 'EastEnders' staff have been warned against signing similar deals.
