BBC signs 24-hour news distribution deal in the US

LONDON – The BBC has signed its first distribution deal in the US with Cablevision Systems Corporation for its 24-hour news channel, for which it revealed plans in a deal with Discovery Communications in January.

The BBC announced plans for its 24-hour news channel, BBC World News, in a deal between Discovery Communications and BBC World.

Later this month, BBC World News will be available to all Cablevision's digital cable customers in the New York metropolitan area.

Richard Sambrook, director of the BBC global news division, said that studies had shown that there is a huge increase in US audience demand for international news, which was not being met by domestic US networks.

"US networks seem to be focusing on fewer and fewer international stories. The BBC's massive newsgathering strength means we're able to bring audiences breaking news stories from anywhere in the world within minutes. We are very pleased to have secured our first major distribution agreement in the US, before such a discriminating and significant audience," he said.

"BBC World News is a quality addition to our digital cable service, and we are pleased that our customers will be the first in the nation to experience this compelling programming service," Patricia Gottesman, Cablevision's executive vice-president of product management and marketing, said.

The BBC said that World News programming would include coverage of US news events of international importance and programming that offered analysis, as well as news.
