The European Media & Marketing Survey Winter 2005 revealed that BBC World came third out of the top five European markets with a daily audience of 708,000. EuroNews' daily reach is 1,399,000, CNN International follows closely behind with 1,344,000, Bloomberg with 495,000 viewers and CNBC at 446,000.
BBC World has also ranked as the most popular news channel in Poland, which joined the EMS survey for the first time following its entry into the EU, attracting 1.2m viewers a month, a 40% reach, more than any other news channel. This increased the channel's audience to 10.3m monthly affluent viewers across Europe.
According to the survey, BBC World has added 350,000 weekly viewers over the last 12 months. EuroNews audience has increased by 4% since 2004 and CNN International by 3% during the same period.
Each week, 2.3m viewers watch BBC World and not CNN, a 4% increase year-on-year to June 2005.
Jeremy Nye, head of research and planning at BBC World, said: "As well as being delighted with the excellent audience figures for Poland, we are particularly proud that these have been made available for the first time.
"Europe is not standing still, and we hope EMS will expand eastwards in future years. Across Western Europe, our growth continues -- a fitting reward for the hard work and dedication of all at BBC World."
Among Europe's elite, CNN remained top leading news provider with a 13% gap in monthly reach to its nearest competitor, according to The Global Capital Markets Survey, which was conducted by Objective Research between May and November 2005.
Jonathan Davies, senior vice-president of CNN International ad sales, said: "CNN has consolidated its position as the channel of choice for the critical demographic of the upscale viewer or global citizen. The more upscale the audience, the stronger the affinity they demonstrate for CNN over other international news channels."
The survey from Dutch research consultancy Interview-NSS is released twice yearly, showing lifestyle and media consumption data of the main income earners in Europe. Two degrees of the survey are produced -- EMS regular, which covers the top 20% of main income earners, and EMS Select which targets the top 3% from 16 European countries.
To achieve EMS Select status the participant must earn €80,000 or more, be a frequent flyer with six or more flights and be a top manager in a company employing 10 or more people.
The 16 countries are UK, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Poland.
