The Canada-UK Script Incubation Programme will provide six television drama writers with special workshops, case studies and story and script mentoring -- all stressing the value of co-production.
Three writers from the UK will travel to Canada next year and vice-versa. The ultimate goal of the writer's exchange is to create future projects that would be fit for a television license or development deal.
The programme also includes additional partnerships with CanWest broadcasters, the Canadian Film Centre and BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC.
The programme will develop these concepts and enhance co-production knowledge among the writers, a first of its kind for both the BBC and CanWest.
Christine Shipton, senior vice-president for CanWest drama and factual content, said: "Canada is home to some of the best creative writing talent in the world. This programme allows Canadian writers to share their stories, explore creative partnerships and really spread their wings."
Amy Mulcair, vice-president of publicity for the BBC, said: "The UK is bursting with burgeoning writing talent but the BBC is interested in giving BBC writers the opportunity to gain valuable experience overseas."
