Last week, the BBC revealed that BBC News was regularly visited by 5m people, which equates to 23% of all UK internet users. This compares with 11% three years ago.
BBC Sport has also seen a significant increase in traffic. The number of visitors to the site has doubled in the last two years to more than 2m people a week.
The flagship BBC News website relaunches today and the updated BBC Sport site goes live tomorrow.
Both sites have been redesigned and on-screen layout has been made wider to allow for more news stories to be seen at the top of the page. Other changes include allowing each page to be viewed in a single scroll. Download times have also been decreased, making the site as much as 30% faster.
Richard Deverell, head of BBC News Interactive, said: "These changes mark a significant improvement in the ease of use and the download speed for both the news and sports sites. However, they are evolutionary rather than revolutionary and build on the success of these sites. I hope users will soon feel comfortable with the new designs."
The changes to BBC News Online also allows for the pages to be more adaptable, so that in the event of a breaking news story and demand increases they can still be downloaded quickly.
Andrew Thompson, head of new media, sports news and development at BBC Sport, said: "Over the last two years, the BBC Sport website has built up an impressive user base, establishing itself as the country's leading general sports site.
"The exciting new design will make the user's journey around our great range of content even more enjoyable -- as well as helping to emphasise the strong links between the site and BBC Sport's television and radio output."
