BBC One's 'New Tricks' reaches record high of 8.9m

LONDON - BBC One's 'New Tricks' is going from strength to strength, reaching a record high of 8.9m last night while 'The Hairy Bakers' made a strong return on BBC Two with 3.7m viewers, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The detective drama, starring Dennis Waterman and Amanda Redman, has had consistently high ratings and won the primetime slot again for BBC One attracting a 35.9% share of the 9pm-10pm audience.

Last night's episode, the penultimate in the series, saw the team reopen the case of a murdered student, whose body was found on wasteland.

'Dragon's Den', which last night included pitches for a website for foodies and a magic whiteboard, pulled in 3.6m viewers on BBC Two and a 14.3% share of the 9pm-10pm audience.

It beat ITV1's 'Superhuman: Genius' documentary looking at gifted people in music, science and arts, which netted 3.3m viewers and a 13.5% share of the prime-time slot.

The second episode of Channel 4's 'Kevin McCloud and the Big Town Plan', which sees the presenter following a community-led regeneration scheme in a former mining town in Yorkshire, attracted 1.1m viewers and a 4.5% share of the 9pm audience. Including Channel 4+1 figures it reached 1.3m viewers and a 5.2% share.

Five drew 657,000 viewers and a 3.1% share of the 9pm-11pm audience for its repeat of clips show 'Before They Were Stars: Greatest TV Moments'.

'The Hairy Bakers', formerly known as 'The Hairy Bikers', returned to BBC Two last night pulling in 3.7m viewers and a 15.5% share of the 8.30pm-9pm audience.

The first episode in the series saw hairy bakers Dave Myers and Simon King riding around the north of England making a selection of breads including brown ale loaf and barley stotty.

Later in the evening 'Big Brother' attracted 2.9m viewers and a 15.9% share of the 10pm-11pm audience for Channel 4. Including Channel 4+1 figures it managed 3m viewers and a 16.7% share.

The Olympics coverage on BBC One attracted 2.6m viewers and a 38.1% share of the audience between 9am and 12pm. The afternoon's coverage netted 3.2m viewers and a 34.6% share of the 12.45pm-5.15pm audience.

The highlights programme 'The Games Today' on the same channel drew 5.3m viewers and a 25.7% share of the 7pm-8pm audience.
