BBC Olympic strike callled off after threat of legal action

LONDON – BBC Technology workers have called off a strike that could have blacked out coverage of the Olympic Games after the corporation threatened the Bectu union with legal action.

The industrial action planned for August 13 and 14, the opening weekend of the Athens Olympics, could have caused a BBC blackout.

This threat prompted the BBC to take a tougher than usual stance against Bectu.

The writ claimed the strike would breach industrial relations law. Bectu was forced to back down on the recommendation of its legal advisers.

Bectu called for strike action in July after the BBC proposed to sell its technology arm to Siemens.

Workers were unhappy with the pension scheme, terms of employment and rushed handover day of September 6 organised as part of the £2bn deal.
