LONDON - The BBC's on-demand TV service, BBC iPlayer, went live today (Friday), allowing members of the public to download programmes online for free for up to a week after transmission.
The service is currently in beta form, and the BBC said it will launch a full service later in the summer once further testing is complete.
It also plans to make the service accessible via links from YouTube and other potential distribution partners later in the year.
The BBC is also working with Virgin Media towards a launch on cable, as well as developing a version of the player for Mac and Microsoft Vista.
