The nomination has caused a ripple of controversy throughout the press. Ross has been cautioned in recent months for several comments deemed ‘offensive' and ‘inappropriate' by the BBC Trust watchdog.

Last year Ross was suspended for three months after making lurid phone calls to Andrew Sachs with Russell Brand. He was caution last year for ‘unnecessary' comments to actress Gwyneth Paltrow in an interview. The trust also criticised an interview with Michael Aspel.

Ross has been put forward for the best entertainment performance. The awards take place in April and aim to reward the best TV talent.
