The activity, which takes place in the run-up to World Mental Health Day on 10 October, illustrates how smiling can help improve mental wellbeing.
‘What Makes You Smile' campaign will launch online at bbc.co.uk/headroom, the broadcaster's site which provides information on everyday stresses, and BBC Big Screens around the country from 28 September.
The activity, created by HarrimanSteel, will be supported with programming content across TV and radio, with celebrity hosts including Ruby Wax. Celebrities and members of the public will be asked to share what makes them smile on the website.
Headroom's campaign will start online with a series of animated films in which balloons come alive to discuss what makes them smile - from people watching the rides at Blackpool pleasure beech, growing flowers or singing, each balloon has its own story to tell.
In addition, Headroom balloons will appear at 13 UK locations, including Cardiff, Edinburgh and Liverpool, from 29 September.
The campaign culminates in a series of events on World Mental Health Day at six Big Screen locations: Norwich, Hull, Swansea, Edinburgh, Portsmouth and Waltham Forest. The events will provide activities such as Tai Chi and dancing, with local partners running a range of games, karaoke and fun activities for all the family.
