BBC appoints Childs as global TV channels chief

LONDON - BBC Worldwide has appointed Darren Childs to the new role of managing director of global TV channels.

Childs, formerly senior vice-president for international networks for Sony Pictures Television International, is charged with leading the expansion of the international channels business of BBC Worldwide.

He will report to John Smith, chief executive officer of BBC Worldwide, and takes a seat on the BBC Worldwide board. Mike Phillips, the deputy chief executive, has been acting managing director of the division and will continue in this capacity until Childs joins later this year.

"Childs' experience and insight will help to maximise the potential of the expertise in our channels teams and of our strong brand image worldwide, and we look forward to seeing expansion in the business over the coming year," Smith said.

BBC Worldwide's channels business comprises 19 wholly owned and joint venture television channels. These include the UKTV portfolio, with Flextech Television, and cross-border joint ventures with Discovery Communications for Animal Planet and People+Arts as well as the wholly owned BBC Prime, BBC America and BBC Food.
